So I figured if I was going to create my first megapost, I should try to tackle something well.... mega, huge, big, whatever- and there is quite a bit material to work through here. If you're into black metal then chances are you've come across the French black metal collective "Les Légions Noires" once or twice at least, but if not then this is the majority of their more well known work as well as some of the lesser known gems in their discography. Again, if you're unfamiliar Les Légions Noires then their simplified biography is that they formed as a response to the bands of the early Norwegian black metal scene (Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, etc) and created some of the most dirty, unpolished, and downright terrifying works of black metal and dark ambient (as well as admittedly many of the stereotypes cliche to black metal) that you'll ever see. Many bands like Vlad Tepes and Mütiilation opted for a much faster, Venom/Bathory influenced style of black metal playing catchy but macabre tunes while others such as Moëvöt and Aäkon Këëtrëh created hauntingly sinister works of dark ambient that are sometimes hard to force yourself to sit through because they're just so damned creepy and seriously unsettling. This is a lot of material to work through as I said, so I personally recommend starting with "Vampires of Black Imperial Blood" by Mütiilation and "March to the Black Holocaust" by Vlad Tepes/Belketre if you're looking for some more classic and familiar black metal, while "Dans la forêt..." by Aäkon Këëtrëh and either of Moëvöt's only two releases are great for everything previously mentioned about them (soul crushing dark ambient, etc, etc). Other than that I recommend heading over to Metal Archives and checking out some reviews on the other albums posted here if you want to try and figure out which others you might like. Other than that though, have at it.

  2. awesome post; I already had most of this stuff downloaded but lost it all in a hard drive crash a couple of years back, and the old source is gone... thanks for allowing me to replace and add to that stuff!

minor note - the link for Belketre: Ambre Zuèrkl Vuordhrévarhtre (1996) points to the Belathuzur '94 demo instead
