Windhand - Self Titled

'Self Titled'

Review by Elek Malcolm-Madill

Genre/s: Doom Metal, Sludge Metal
For Fans Of: Cough, Stoned Jesus, Fu Manchu, High Priest of Saturn

I debated whether or not to post this album for a little while, as there isn't a download link for it on the band's bandcamp. However I've been listening to it a lot lately, and its just too good not to. Windhand remind me a lot of High Priest of Saturn in the aspect of their high, ethereal sounding vocals but manage to wonderfully incorporate the black metal influenced riffs and musical style of Cough- not just emulating or copying it, but growing from it into their very own sludge/doom metal animal. This being said, I can't help but admit that Windhand are very heavily classic inspired which isn't usually done very well due to lack of originality, creativity, etc. But Windhand is one of the handful of groups I've heard that does the "classic" stoner/doom/psychedelic/whatever sound really, really well in a sea of mediocre bands aspiring to just be the new Electric Wizard or Saint Vitus. Anyway, if you're into the "classic" feel of doom metal and are looking for something new to add to your doom vocabulary then Windhand is definitely worth a listen.
